Summer School in Humanitarian Action

There is a growing number of crisis and catastrophe situations that are plaguing populations today, and the demand for professionals with humanitarian response skills is increasing.

Humanitarian Action can not only focus on responding to crisis situations but also seek to develop programs that can reduce the vulnerability of populations and minimize the impact of these situations. Facing this challenges requires a holistic understanding of situations, for which it is necessary to master different areas of knowledge.

The Summer School in Humanitarian Action at the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa intends to capacitate its participants with general knowledge about alternative approaches to act in situations of humanitarian support, with a special focus on the capacity for reflection and identification of techniques and methods that are applicable in this scope. A holistic and multidisciplinary vision of the challenges of humanitarian action will be addressed, seeking the direct and active involvement of the participants.

This Summer School will feature international speakers from European institutions and non-governmental organizations, with extensive experience on the analyzed topics, as well as faculty members from ISCTE.

Partnerships with entities linked to humanitarian action will allow, through study visits and internships, direct observation of the aspects to be analyzed in the different modules that make up this Summer School.

In this context, this Summer School is intended for those interested in developing knowledge about Humanitarian Action, having completed or about to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any area of ​​study, as well as professionals who wish to get acquainted with fundamental aspects in this field.

Goals of the Summer School in Humanitarian Action

The Summer School in Humanitarian Action at the ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa aims to provide its students with a holistic view of the various forms of action to prepare for and respond to humanitarian contexts. At the end of this Summer School in Humanitarian Action, candidates should be able to approach critically and in an integrated way responses in humanitarian action as well as develop their own proposals.

Teaching-Learning Methods

The faculty includes a group of international speakers, from European institutions and non-governmental organizations, with experience in the topics that will be addressed. The teaching-learning process requires the active involvement of the participants, both in the discussion of topics in class and in the approach to practical situations.

Partnerships

This Summer School in Humanitarian Action will count on partner organizations, national and international ones, that develop activity related to humanitarian action, that will allow the accomplishment of study visits and reception of candidates for internships.

Target audience

In this context, this Summer School is intended for those interested in developing knowledge about Humanitarian Action, who are about to complete or have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any area of ​​study, as well as professionals who wish to gain knowledge of fundamental aspects in this area.

Requirements:

To apply:

  • Are about to complete or have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any area of ​​study

During the program:

  • Participate in class discussion
  • Prepare materials and reading ahead of class

Selection criteria:

Candidates who meet the application requirements will be selected.

Candidates will be assessed on an ongoing process. Applications will close when the total number of positions is filled or when the application deadline ends (of the two options, whichever occurs first).

Candidates who meet the admission requirements and are not admitted because of lack of positions will be on hold, and may join the program in the event of non-registration of the admitted candidates for the academic year to which the application refers.

Fee:

Not including housing: 1450€ (*)

(*) for students from ISCTE, this fee will be reduced in 50%

With housing in double room: 1750€

With housing in single room: 1950€

This fee includes:

  • classes, workshops and seminars
  • course materials
  • use of the library, PG lad and overall ISCTE facilities
  • fieldtrips during the week
  • fieldtrip during the weekend with transportation, housing, meals and other activities
  • public transportation card in Lisbon for subway and bus
  • internship
  • lunch during the two weeks
  • welcome lunch
  • farewell dinner
  • airport pick-up service

Cancelation Policy:

In case of droping down, we apply the following policy:

  • Cancellation until 31/05/2019 – 200€ will be retained by ISCTE.
  • Cancellation later than 31/05/2019 – no reimbursement

Any bank fees charged within the reimbursement will be borne by the student.

Diploma: those students who successfully complete this Summer School, will be awarded a Diploma of Specialized Studies in Humanitarian Action. This diploma corresponds to 6 ECTS credits.
